To commemorate ‘Be Bold For Change,’ which was the 2017 International Women’s Day campaign, the South-South region of Nigeria embarked on a massive market women campaign. Prior to the mobilization, the South-South coordinators and volunteers realized that the community women, who are usually in the market places throughout the day barely participate in self-awareness workshops or campaigns that promotes their empowerment and emancipation from societal obstacles, so the region decided to go to them at their place of work.
“The women are always busy—from market to family chores—from morning to night. If they won’t come to us, we will go to them. Today is all about them and they need to know how important this campaign is, to them, and all women across the world.”
ICON volunteers took to the market places, streets and roadsides with cardboards to campaign on women empowerment and create awareness on common societal challenges confronting rural women in various communities.
